Meet Judy, Our Senior Global Logistics Manager
At Harris Spice, our success is built on the hard work and dedication of our fantastic team. From our research and development team to our sales staff, everyone plays a role in making sure we provide top-notch spices and herbs to our customers. Teamwork and commitment are what keep us going strong. In our new "Employee Spotlight" series, we're excited to introduce you to some of the incredible people who make up our Harris Spice family.
Tell us about your background. What led you to a career in logistics?
I have 30 years of experience in global logistics and import & export operations. After I graduated from college with my bachelor’s degree in international business, I started my career in import and export operations. I was fascinated by the complexity and depth of logistics and enjoyed working as a partner with exporters, importers, shipping lines, ports, terminals, warehouses, underwriters, truckers, customs, and other government agencies... It still amazes me today that so many wonderful people and teams work together to move cargo across the oceans and borders from origins to destinations. I’m passionate that I am a part of this.
What strategies have you implemented to improve efficiency and reduce costs?
Eliminating third parties to own the process in house as much as we can and work directly with our logistics partners.
What was your most complex logistical project, and what did you learn from it?
Becoming our own customs broker to clear customs for Harris Freeman’s ocean imports ourselves as well as establishing the entire C-TPAT program which was successfully validated by CBP in 2003. I learned that we make the impossibles possible.
How does technology enhance our logistics operations?
Because we are our own customs broker, the 24/7 live connection with US Customs/FDA/USDA in ACE enables us to do pre-clearances 5 days prior to ship’s arrival at US port. This is a great advantage for us to arrange hot containers to be delivered our warehouses and customers as soon as they are discharged from vessels.
What defines the success in the logistics flow at Harris Spice?
Teamwork and close communications with our logistics partners. It’s crucial to build long-term strong relationships with our partners for success. We rely on our partners to keep the logistics flow fluid especially at challenging times. Our teams play such an important role in engaging with all parties involved throughout the supply chains and they are the foundation for ongoing overall success in logistics.
