Our Commitment to Sustainability
At Harris Spice, sustainability is part of who we are. We take action to protect the environment, support communities, and create long-term value across the spice supply chain. Our proactive data driven approach keeps us transparent and accountable to stakeholders. By keeping quality and sustainability at the center of everything we do—from field to finished blend—we help our customers create products that taste better, perform better, and positively impact the world.
Environmental Stewardship
We are dedicated to minimizing our environmental footprint by implementing sustainable sourcing, fostering biodiversity, and adopting responsible farming practices. We commit to preventing deforestation and soil degradation, while prioritizing eco-friendly initiatives that reduce water and energy consumption. Our continuous focus is on lowering our overall environmental impact.
Driving Measurable Progress Toward Our Net Zero Goals
- 64% Renewable Energy – Our two main facilities combined now source more than half their total power from solar
- Zero hazardous Waste to Landfill – All hazardous waste is segregated, stored safely, and sent only to authorized recyclers.
- Water Stewardship – 80% of total water consumption at our Vietnam facilities are now recycled for further use.
- Responsible Packaging – By prioritizing recyclable PET and PP materials, we are reducing plastic use and moving toward 100% recyclable packaging solutions.
- Spotlight Story – Our solar installation offsets 1137 tons of CO₂ annually — roughly equivalent to planting 51,700 trees.

Social Impact
Building Stronger Communities and a Safer Workplace
People First — In 2024, we recorded zero lost-time injuries, driven by more rigorous safety audits and ongoing employee training.
Empowering Communities — The Harris Freeman Foundation allocated $135,000 to support sustainability-focused initiatives. This year, the Foundation partnered with 11 organizations, directing $88,175 specifically toward sustainability and social impact programs, reinforcing our commitment to environmental responsibility and community support.
Diversity & Inclusion — In 2024, Harris Spice continued to advance a more inclusive and equitable workplace, with women making meaningful progress across the organization, especially in leadership roles.
Responsible Sourcing
Empowering Farmers through Sustainable Agriculture & Strategic Partnerships
We work closely with farming communities across Africa, Vietnam, and Indonesia through comprehensive development programs. These initiatives empower farmers with the knowledge, tools, and resources needed to implement sustainable and environmentally responsible agricultural practices.
Sustainable Sourcing of Cassia in Vietnam — In 2024, we launched a four-year program across 352 hectares in Vietnam to advance sustainable cassia sourcing. The project helps farmers adopt responsible practices and work toward UEBT certification, opening access to global markets. The project is intended to strengthen household earnings, build community resilience, and protect biodiversity in cassia-growing regions.
The Indonesia Pepper Project — In 2020, Harris Spice began the 5-year project to strengthen sustainable pepper production in Indonesia. We focused on training smallholder farmers in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Organic Farming, and Rainforest Alliance Standards.
Red Pepper Journey: From East African Fields to Global Markets — An initiative in Tanzania, Kenya, and Malawi focused on producing export-grade, low pesticide residue (low-PR) red pepper that meets the highest international standards.
Governance and Ethics
Integrity, transparency, and accountability remain at our core.- 100% of suppliers have signed the Supplier Code of Conduct to ensure sourcing is ethical.
- 3rd party audit of BRCGS & SMETA, a four-pillar standard reflects our customer centric values and guides us to commit to producing safe food and safe & ethical operations.
- Our commitment to a safe, inclusive, and respectful workplace is reflected in robust HR policies that uphold ethical standards, prevent harassment, and ensure full compliance with applicable laws. Continuous training and transparent processes cultivate a culture grounded in accountability and mutual respect.
- ESG Steering Committee (sustainability council) now includes cross-functional leaders to ensure strong oversight and data-driven decision-making.
